About The Role
This position will be the key content partner to the SVP, Membership & Subscriptions. You will take ownership of defining and executing a highly engaging content strategy for new membership and subscription products across retail channels, including digital (newsletters, website, social), data, research, and community building . You will serve as the face and voice of the brand, engaging members to provide value, inform content decisions, and assure they are well served. The successful candidate will have deep experience in the retail industry and have the ability to produce thought provoking insights and opinions that will help members with their business and career decision making.
The role will report directly to the SVP, Membership & Subscriptions, but will maintain a “dotted line” strategic oversight reporting relationship with the EVP of Content.
Key Role Responsibilities
Lead team in executing membership content strategies for digital, event, and research membership products, including editorial and sponsored content, delivering unique and actionable insights that help retail professionals make informed business decisions and gain a competitive advantage;
Produce content that will attract new members and engage, inform, inspire, entertain and retain members in order to achieve budgeted revenue goals;
Synthesize industry data and news, and turn this into insightful analysis and research for members to act on. Areas of focus include data analysis and forecasting, analysis surrounding the retail industry, opportunity and risk assessment, assessing the impact of macro, political and other sector developments on the industry, government regulation, and company analysis;
Deliver high quality actionable advice through newsletters, research reports, video-based and face-to-face events with members;
Serve as “face of membership”—building relationships with members, wider audience communities, industry associations, influencers as sources for business development; participating in internal/external events as host, facilitator, presenter, panelist, expert;
Serve as “voice of members” advocate to ensure member needs are identified and fulfilled across a complex mix of content formats;
Brings to role existing professional network; builds relationships with key retail influencers—as potential content contributors and partners;
Collaborates with the EnsembleIQ research team to define and execute plans for creation and delivery of compelling research products, managing execution with content team and internal BrandLab agency—including definition of topics, survey questions, and writing analysis articles;
Work closely with Membership Marketing to ensure that the value proposition is clearly articulated across all marketing communications;
Partner with Events Operations team to help develop and execute compelling member focused events - including development of themes, agendas, session topics, and speaker recruitment;
Partner with Tech and Digital Operations teams to create the working processes for member content delivery;
Track member response to content through surveys, metrics reports and anecdotal communications to understand relative impact, inform trend insights delivery to audience and business partners, and inform continuous improvement of content strategy;
Line management for an editor upon the launch of the first new service and scale the team accordingly over time;
Work with SVP, Membership & Subscriptions to set annual freelance contributor budget; Manages staff assignments to and ongoing contracts with contributors to assure budget compliance.
10 years of retail analysis and content production experience;
Proven ability to develop innovative content strategies, lead and participate in their execution;
Excellent collaborator with the ability to quickly build rapport and gain member trust;
Demonstrated ability to write compelling, actionable research for an executive audience;
Confident and engaging speaker with a high level of executive presence;
Critical thinker with the ability to take complex, disparate ideas and distill them into simple, provocative and actionable recommendations — and be willing to take a stand and share your view;
Ability to work with and analyze large data sets and forecast across key retail indicators;
Superior listening skills, connecting with members to understand their challenges and set the agenda for future research and discussions;
Willing to challenge conventional norms and views;
Ability to travel up to 10-20% of workdays as needed;
